Customization = Cost
Legacy cluster-tool wafer-handling systems-based on designs dating
back to the 1980s-are built specifically to address single, unique
processes. Each cluster tool is designed for an individual application:
each one customized around its primary process application. These
designs are, by nature:
- Inflexible, since they require a different
handler for each process-necessitating heavy customization and
high associated costs
- Limited in their capacity for expansion
and volume processing
QuickLink™: Assembly Line Revisited

The QuickLink™ wafer-handling system, by contrast, is composed
of cost-effective, high-volume, off-the-shelf components, linked
together into what is effectively an "assembly-line" method
of linear manufacturing:
- Which permits virtually unlimited growth, higher throughput
and a highly adaptable mixing of process modules
- Capable of maintaining full process isolation
All on the same platform.
The Road Ahead…
In the futureto meet ever-pressing cost and time-to-market
requirements-semiconductor fabs will accelerate the move toward
increased complexity, greater process control and small lot sizes:
demanding from OEMs the linkable BlueShift™ wafer-handling
systems that can make this future a reality.
